Handmade Macrame Jewelry Care Guide

How to Care for Your Handmade Macramé & Crystal Jewelry

Each piece at Stones Unturned Studio is created using natural stones, waxed threads, and metal elements.

Natural materials are alive in their own way — they age, soften, and evolve over time. With gentle care, your jewelry can stay beautiful for years.

This guide isn’t about restriction.
It’s about preserving beauty.

General Care Guidelines

To maintain the look and longevity of your piece:

• Avoid prolonged exposure to water
• Remove before swimming or showering
• Store in a dry place
• Keep away from perfumes and harsh chemicals
• Avoid extended direct sunlight

All materials used are durable — but mindful care keeps them looking their best.

About Brass & Humidity

Brass naturally oxidizes over time, especially in humid climates.

You may notice:
• Slight darkening
• A deeper antique tone

This is completely normal and not damage.

To clean brass:
• Use a soft dry cloth for light polishing
• For deeper cleaning, use a gentle brass cleaner or a natural lemon + baking soda mix
• Dry thoroughly before storing

Some people love the aged look. Others prefer to polish it back to shine — both are beautiful.

🧵 Waxed Polyester Thread

We use high-quality waxed polyester cord because it is:

• Strong
• Long-lasting
• Water resistant
• Durable for everyday wear

Over time:

• The wax coating may gradually wear off
• The thread may soften
• It will feel flexible and softer

This is natural and part of the aging process.

While the materials are water resistant, frequent exposure to water can:

• Soften the structure
• Dull the thread’s finish
• Reduce long-term firmness

To maintain its original strudiness, structure and sheen, avoid regular soaking or swimming with it. Prolonged sun exposure may also slightly fade thread color over time.

💎 General Gemstone Care

Most of the stones we use are natural gemstones — formed over thousands or millions of years through geological processes.

Some gemstones are technically crystals in structure. Others are mineral aggregates or organic stones. Regardless of classification, what matters most is this:

They are natural materials.
And natural materials respond to their environment.

To preserve the beauty of your gemstone jewelry:

• Avoid prolonged soaking in water
• Remove before swimming or bathing
• Keep away from perfumes, sprays, and harsh chemicals
• Avoid ultrasonic or chemical cleaners
• Store in a dry, shaded place

While many gemstones are durable enough for everyday wear, repeated exposure to moisture, heat, and friction can gradually affect surface polish, color, or finish.

This isn’t fragility.
It’s nature.

🌿 Porous & Sensitive Gemstones

Some gemstones — like turquoise, opal, and certain varieties of moonstone — are more sensitive to:

• Prolonged water exposure
• Extreme temperature changes
• Strong sunlight
• Oils and perfumes

Porous stones can absorb moisture or chemicals, which may alter their appearance over time.

We recommend:
• Wiping gently with a soft cloth after wear
• Storing separately to avoid scratches
• Keeping away from high humidity environments when not worn

A Note on Sun & Water

While many stones and materials are durable, prolonged exposure to:

• Direct sunlight
• Saltwater
• Chlorinated water
• High humidity

can gradually affect appearance.

It won’t immediately damage your piece — but mindful care preserves its beauty over time.

A Note on Natural Variation

Every gemstone carries inclusions, patterns, and subtle differences. These are not imperfections — they are signatures of natural formation.

No two pieces will ever be identical.

And that is intentional.

✨ Aging Gracefully

Natural jewelry is not plastic.

It evolves.
It softens.
It carries your story.

Slight darkening of brass, softening of thread, or subtle shifts in stone tone are part of long-term wear — not flaws.

We believe in long-term use, not disposable fashion.
